I have always personally enjoyed the fall. With the cooler air temperatures and the water still warm it makes perfect conditions for watermen who make their living on the river. It’s also good for anyone who enjoys fishing. The fish are plentiful and there is still a variety so I can give my charters a choice so far as what species they want to target. Some choose the excitement of trolling for the hook & release large red drum first thing and then after reeling in all they can stand, elect to switch over to troll for blues, stripers, Spanish mackerel, & croakers. Other groups want to anchor and do nothing but chum because they enjoy using lite tackle and they end up with large quantities of fish (blues, stripers & croakers) to take home. I also have some groups who want to stay in the river and bottomfish for the smaller pan fish (spot, croaker, & taylor blues). Whatever your choice, it’s still a good time to be had by all. If you’re interested I have plenty of weekend and weekdays available after the next couple of weeks. Just give me a shout.

Don't think this is all they caught. They had plenty in the cooler to take home with them.

Nice Night For A Dinner Cruise

A flat calm, moonlit night made for a wonderful dinner cruise across the Potomac to a seafood restaurant on Saturday night. This is an annual event for these friends from the Tappahannock area and I really enjoy having them onboard and appreciate their business.

Some Unusual Catches….

Charter bookings were slow this week but when I did go we caught a lot of fish, as well as, some other surprises. Catches included bluefish, croaker, stripers, spot, seagulls, oyster toads and hard crabs! Today on the Open Boat Day we had a great time and everyone had lots of fish to take home. Friday, October 1, will be another Open Boat Day and if the requests keep coming in for these I will set aside some more days. The $100/person with the mixed groups seems to be very popular. If you have a particular time when only a couple of you can go shoot me an email or call and I’ll see if I can get some fill-ins to make the day. Dave

Plenty of bluefish, some spanish mackerel and even some stripers. I still have some open slots available on Saturday, August 28th’s Open Boat Day for the $100 per person. I can see the changes coming almost daily now for fall fishing. It won’t be long and we’ll be gearing up for the fall large Stripers.

Still catching Bluefish & Red Drum – also the Spanish Mackerel have arrived. Haven’t been bottom fishing lately but know there are plenty of croaker around also. I still have openings for the Open Boat Day on Saturday, August 28, I need to fill in order to make it a GO, as well as, plenty other days throughout the year.

All you anglers out there looking for action on BIG fish you better get a group together within the nex tmonth while the Red Drum bite is on. We had a lot of citations this week as you can see from the photos from the last 2 days of fishing. This has been the best I have ever seen it. After catching and releasing the Drum, we’ve gone after the blues and had good numbers there also. I have August days still available and this action will only be around for a few weeks. If you can only go on a weekend I have open Aug 7, 22 ,28, 29, Sept. 4, 5 & 6.

We have had to troll to keep moving to get some relief from the heat. Been catching plenty of Bluefish with some keeper Stripers. Cooler temps are on the way but hot fishing is here to stay!

Another Open Boat Day on August 20th.

Due to popular demand, I will be having another open boat day on Friday, August 20th. The cost is $100/person for the day which includes the mate’s tip, we leave from Coan River Marina in Lottsburg, VA at 6:30 a.m,. and it is by reservation only. Boat limit is 10 people. All you need to bring is your lunch/beverage and a cooler to take your fish home in. Call 804-529-6725 or email to make reservations.

The past several trips we chummed and trolled for Blues and Stripers. Luckily most days we’ve either had a little breeze or just having the boat moving when we trolled made it not so bad so far as the heat.
